What is DPG or Dipropylene Glycol
Dipropylene Glycol Low Odor Plus (DPG LO+) is a high-purity product specifically created for use in odor-sensitive applications like fragrances and cosmetics. This distilled liquid has a purity exceeding 99.5% and is nearly odorless, colorless, water-soluble, and hygroscopic, making it particularly advantageous for perfumery oils. This specific grade of DPG was developed to fulfill the consistent quality requirements of manufacturers in the fragrance and personal care industries.
DPG LO+ offers excellent co-solvency for water, oils, and hydrocarbons, while maintaining minimal odor, low skin irritation potential, low toxicity, and consistent isomer distribution. These qualities make it ideal for use in various products, including:
- Perfumes and colognes, especially in roll-on bottles
- Skin care products like creams, lotions, and sun-care cosmetics
- Deodorants and antiperspirants, including roll-on and stick forms
- Hair care items such as shampoos, conditioners, styling, and coloring products
- Shaving products like creams, foams, gels, and after-shave lotions
- Bath and shower products
DPG – Dipropylene Glycol – is also integral to the perfume-making process, as shown in the standard formulas for perfumes like EDP or EDT. After mixing all ingredients, it’s essential to test them on sticks to ensure the desired outcome.

Additionally, if a fixative liquid is unavailable, you can substitute it with fragrance oil. For example, 15% of fragrance oil becomes 15.5% with the addition of 0.5%. It’s also crucial to follow long-lasting process rules when creating perfumes.
Here are the detailed formulation guidelines for making 100 ml of perfume. To adjust the formula for different sizes:
- 50 ml batch: divide all ingredients by 2
- 30 ml batch: multiply components by 0.3
- 15 ml batch: multiply components by 0.15

Advantages of Using Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) in Perfumery
Using DPG in perfumery offers several advantages:
- Dilution: You can dilute pure fragrance oils purchased from a manufacturer to increase profit margins. Although the scent’s intensity might decrease, DPG’s odorless nature ensures that only advanced laboratory chromatography could detect such dilution.
- Carrier for Fragrance Oil: DPG can carry fragrance oil without alcohol in roll-on bottles. For instance, if you want to use 20% pure oils in a roll-on, you can fill the remaining 80% with DPG. For more information on manipulating fragrance oils and making them long-lasting, you can refer to previous articles on maceration rules and DPG solvents.
- Use in Alcoholic Perfumes: DPG is also used in alcoholic perfumes due to its odorless, colorless, water-soluble, and hygroscopic properties.
