Side Effects of Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol is a versatile compound used in thousands of products, from personal care items to medications. While it is generally safe, there are potential side effects, especially for individuals with certain sensitivities or pre-existing health conditions.

Side Effects of Propylene Glycol

Common Side Effects of Propylene Glycol

1. Skin Irritation and Allergic Reactions

Propylene glycol acts as a moisturizer in many skincare products, but it can cause irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, resulting in redness or itching. Testing a small skin area before full use is recommended. Those who experience irritation should discontinue use and consult a dermatologist.

2. Potential Kidney and Liver Impact

Some medications, such as intravenous lorazepam, contain propylene glycol. In high doses, especially for those with existing kidney issues, it can potentially impact kidney function. Monitoring creatinine levels in the blood is advised during prolonged use. However, propylene glycol may also offer protective benefits for the liver against acetaminophen toxicity.

3. Concerns for Infants and Pregnant Women

Infants cannot metabolize propylene glycol as efficiently as adults due to undeveloped enzyme pathways. Therefore, pregnant women and parents should minimize exposure to propylene glycol during critical growth periods.

4. Neurological Symptoms

Oral ingestion of propylene glycol may cause neurological symptoms, including seizures or anxiety in sensitive individuals. However, it does not bioaccumulate in the body, and normal doses are generally safe for individuals with healthy kidney and liver function.

Safety and Regulation

The FDA categorizes propylene glycol as “generally safe.” Organizations like the Environmental Working Group also rate its safety favorably, with limited toxicity in standard applications. The compound is non-bioaccumulative, breaking down in the body within 48 hours under normal exposure conditions.

While generally safe, propylene glycol should be used with caution in sensitive populations, with potential side effects considered carefully.
